Orange has said the launch of its internet interactive map, designed to showcase the findings from its Connected Britain research and reveal how universal access to speedy and reliable mobile and fixed broadband could transform the UK. The report demonstrates which regions and cities could see their populations explode- or shrink- in the future, as the government’s Digital Britain report becomes a reality and more and more people are able to choose where they live and work.

Packed with interesting facts about the UK’s major regions and cities, the map guides visitors through what makes each place tick, how advanced it currently is in offering flexible working options, and how it could change in the future.

Are you dreaming of metropolitan apartment living or is a country cottage more your thing? Do you find the coast calming or is the suburban semi more up your street? A quik one- minute survey on the interactive map site will help visitors discover where they are most suited to living and working and participants will also be automatically entered into a prize draw1 to win a brand new Samsung Omnia Expert B7330, HTC Touch Pro2 or Samsung Genio Qwerty, , perfect for the home or work office.

The Linked Great Britain research, carried out in 2009, found that the South West of England could see a population increase of more than 150% by 2015 as universal access to dependable and fast internet becomes the norm. London would keep its place as a top location with a 40% increase predicted, while Scotland could see a population jump of more than 50% as workers head North.

The report, which summarizes the conclusions of a survey of 3, 281 office employees from the united kingdom, as well pointed out that UK business could save up to £31. 7 billion2 by giving workers the ability to work more flexibly.

Robert Ainger, Director of Corporate Marketing, Orange UK, said, “Our research found that a digitally connected workforce could change the face of Britain as we know it. Not only could the population itself shift, but the way we work could also fundamentally change.”

New Data Centre deal by BT.

BT gives customers data hosting savings with new data center deal
BT Engineer looking through data cables

New center offers typical savings of £70k+

It looks like BT are serious about data hosting. They are spending considerable sums on data hosting infrastructure BT customers can now increase the size and protect their IT infrastructure at will following a new agreement with Europe’s newest, largest and most technically advanced, tier 3+ data centre.

BT has taken 380 racks at NGD Europe, Next Generation Data Limited’s newly-launched 75,000 sq metres facility near Newport. Rollout began in August and will be ready for customer use by February 2010.

As part of a seven year agreement, BT Business, BT Engage IT and BT Global Services customers’ IT capacity and power can be boosted on demand at the secure, out-of-London centre. This investment extends BT Global Services’ data centre facilities; it has 38 customer facing data centres around the globe.

Customers can now typically save over £70,000 over previous hosting options and be able to better capitalise on sales or customer service requests at busy data processing times such as Xmas and school holidays.

NGD Europe opened as a brand new facility earlier this year with the pledge to invest £200 million over five years to create one of Europe’s largest data centres. The site has a direct connection to a power sub-station only 1 km away to deliver a huge 180 MVA of supply, ensuring no surges or drop offs. The service can be provided using 100 per cent renewable energy and is the only tier 3 data centre outside of London with no planned downtime.

BT Business currently provides IT and communications to more than a million UK businesses. BT Global Services currently provides data centre services including co-location, web hosting, managed applications and IT professional services to more than 2,000 customers around the globe.

As part of the agreement, BT Business will also supply cabling, APC racks and connectivity technology to support the service facility’s customers.

“In our experience, UK firms are crying out for a secure data facility that allows them to increase the size and capability of their IT systems and keep running as normal, come what may. Using NGD Europe they’ll be able to save thousands in running costs in the next year alone,” said John Dovey, director, ICT BT Business.

Orange will instead be rethinking their IPTV strategy, as they aren’t too keen on just offering an identikit version of BT’s Vision service. It is thought that some sort of hybrid IPTV/mobile TV tie in might be worked out, with content downloaded to a TV set-top box being able to be transferred to compatible handsets, in a similar vein to the Sony Play TV platform, which essentially turns the PlayStation 3 console into a Freeview box, and allows you to watch content on the PSP handset.

Orange have recently launched a new deal which sees Orange Pay Monthly mobile customers on 18 month contracts able to qualify for a £10 discount off of any of the Orange Broadband products, which effectively makes the Home Starter package (£10 a month for up to 8Mbps speed and 10GB usage) a free offering.

TalkTalk (http://www.talktalk.co.uk), the biggest provider of broadband to Britain’s homes, is launching a new high performance package called TalkTalk Pro.

TalkTalk Pro will be available to the ISP’s four million customers from November. It costs just £14.99 a month* and comes with download speeds of up to 24meg – making it one of the fastest broadband products on the market – as well as unlimited downloads and a free advanced “N” wireless router giving a wider connectivity range. It also comes with free anytime UK calls to 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers.

TalkTalk Pro offers huge savings compared to its competitors’ equivalent packages. It will be £202.96 cheaper than BT Unlimited Option 3 (plus Anytime phone plan and mobile add-on) over the course of the contract, £159.79 cheaper than Virgin Media’s XL Broadband (plus XL phone and Talk Mobile) and a whopping £304.69 cheaper than Sky Unlimited (plus Talk Anytime).**

Tristia Clarke from TalkTalk said: “Once again TalkTalk is challenging the market and providing unbeatable value by offering a premium broadband product at a much lower price than its competitors’ packages. So if you’re one of the millions of people who now regularly use your broadband service to download and upload videos and images or stream media around the house, then our high-performance TalkTalk Pro package, giving you the fastest speed your line can handle, is perfect for you.”

TalkTalk believes that TalkTalk Pro will appeal to the 1.5 million adults that its research found were “Digital Extroverts” – early adopters of new technologies and services, who regularly upload content online and for whom the internet is essential to their lives.

Customers who are interested in signing up to the TalkTalk Pro should contact TalkTalk.co.uk sign up or find out more information.
